But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Daily Reading Plan
1 Corinthians 2:14 (NLT) — 14 But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.
1 Corinthians 2:14 (NIV) — 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.
1 Corinthians 2:14-16 (MSG) — 14 The unspiritual self, just as it is by nature, can’t receive the gifts of God’s Spirit. There’s no capacity for them.
Thoughts of Devotion:
It is a great truth when one looks at the condition of the natural man. The person that is not spiritual is very evident that they do not understand the spiritual things! They will never come to understand the eternal truths, on the contrary it is ridiculous to them and makes no sense. They cannot receive the illumination of the biblical truths. Their spiritual understanding is blinded as it tells us in 2 Corinthians 4:4, “whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.”
But for the spiritual man, he who walks in the plentitude of the Holy Spirit things are easy to understand, the world of faith is a reality! Every truth in his Word is illuminated by the work of the Holy Spirit, the pages in the Bible become real and tangible. It is as if the Holy Spirit gives us discernment, direction, and clarity in our minds. Others perhaps do not understand or appreciate these truths, but we rejoice and are blessed in a very special way. We walk with the Spirit of Truth dwelling in us as it tells us in John 14:17, “the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”
Today as believers we must walk like spiritual men and women. Each day the Holy Spirit desires to give us spiritual discernment in every aspect of our lives. We must mature and grow daily in our intimacy with the Holy Spirit. Only in this way will we be able to receive direction and counsel to discern the things that are from God and the things that come from the enemy. We will walk in the light and not in darkness as it tells us in 2 Corinthians 4:6, “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” Only through the spiritual discernment will we be able to avoid making wrong decisions and taking wrong paths. The Holy Spirit will guide us in the truth, and our ways will be illuminated with his presence.
