The Seed On Stony Places

Topic: To Bear Fruit And See Expansion We Will Need Spiritual Firmness, Profound Roots!

But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.

Matthew 13: 20-21 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

Numbers 14-15

Bible Versions:

NLT – 20 The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy. 21 But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word.

MSG – 20 “The seed cast in the gravel—this is the person who hears and instantly responds with enthusiasm. But there is no soil of character, and so when the emotions wear off and some difficulty arrives, there is nothing to show for it.

NIV – 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.

Thoughts of Devotion:

This morning we see the second terrain of the Parable of the Sower. We observe that this seed was not sown in good soil, but fell among the stones. This describes those who hear and receive the Word with joy, but have no roots! They are those believers who live and are moved by their emotions and not by their convictions. The Book of James describes them as double-minded believers, “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind…….8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”(James 1: 6,8).

This Type of Christian life of believer is superficial since the ground barely covers the seed. They don’t have stability, they are described as those who “one day yes, another day no” “one day they are up, another day down” They are fluctuating people who are easily deceived as described by Ephesians 4:14, “that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting.” It is for this reason that the seed never bears fruit, the soil of the heart is not fertile!

Today we must be very careful not to be believers “on stony places.” In the year 2021 we must ensure that our life is good ground so that it bears fruit and more fruit for God. But for this, we will need to make root, to plant ourselves firmly in the Lord! In Ephesians 3:17 he tells us, “that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love. Today is not the time to walk here and there without a clear direction. On the contrary it is time to plant ourselves in the church, be united and allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives.
