But One Thing I Do

Topic: Positioning Our Lives For The Year 2017

12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,

Philippians 3:12-13 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

Revelation 1-6

Bible Versions:

Philippians 3:12-13 (NLT) — 12 I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. 13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it,[a] but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead,

Philippians 3:12-13 (NIV) — 12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,

Thoughts of Devotion:

As we face the end of a year it is necessary to examine our lives. We must take the time to carefully evaluate our walk and see what we have achieved in our walk with God. By doing this I think we must ask, how much have we achieved? and how much do we still have to accomplish? Seeing the Apostle Paul, we observe a man who, though he had accomplished many things in his career and even Christian ministry, he still felt unsatisfied and wanted to do more for the Lord. He understood that there was still more to do, more work, more achievements and much more to do for the Lord. He continued forward with momentum and an impulse into the future!

For the Apostle Paul to manage to extend into the future, we see that he had to forget the past. In other words, there is no future if we do not let go of the past. I think that is where some of us at times are parked, unable to move forward. We are living in the past! Paul had a single purpose, his objective was “to forget and move forward.” This morning we must ask, is my past determining my future? Not only the failures and mistakes of the past, but the achievements and successes. These things can stop us, in thinking that there is no more to do or accomplish for God. The attitude of thinking we have made it and there is no need to achieve more.

We must pray this morning that the Lord show us the great need to progress and move towards what he has for us next year 2017. Great and wonderful things that in advanced He has already prepared for us who love him. As says 1 Corinthians 2: 9 ” But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

Are we anticipating this? God already prepared the way for us to enter and possess all that He has for our lives in the future, but it is in us to forget what was left in 2017 and expand into 2017 with expectation and anticipation of things to come. Do cannot let anything stop us or distract us, forward towards 2017!

Foundational Scriptures:

1 Corinthians 9:24 (NKJV) — 24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.

1 Timothy 6:12 (NKJV) — 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Psalm 138:8 (NKJV) — 8 The Lord will perfect that which concerns me;
Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever;
Do not forsake the works of Your hands.

1 John 3:2 (NKJV) — 2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
