Day 61: Thursday, December 2

Break The Pride

Topic: The Challenge To Humble Ourselves Before The Lord.

I will break the pride of your power; I will make your heavens like iron and your earth like bronze. 20 And your strength shall be spent in vain; for your land shall not yield its produce, nor shall the trees of the land yield their fruit.

Leviticus 26: 19–20 (NKJV)

Bible Versions

Leviticus 26: 19–20 (NIV) – 19 I will break down your stubborn pride and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze. 20 Your strength will be spent in vain, because your soil will not yield its crops, nor will the trees of your land yield their fruit.

Leviticus 26: 19–20 (NLT) – 19 I will break your proud spirit by making the skies as unyielding as iron and the earth as hard as bronze. 20 All your work will be for nothing, for your land will yield no crops, and your trees will bear no fruit.

Thoughts of Devotion:

I am struck this morning by how God is determined to deal with pride within his people. The declaration that God made at the beginning, “I will break the pride of your power.” It is a strong and safe statement. We see how the moment comes in the history of Israel that God decides to deal with his pride.

As we see in this story, Israel had all its trust and dependence on its natural resources such as the fertile land that produced a great harvest every year. The pride in them consisted in that they came to trust their resources more than in the one that produces the land of fruit. Let us understand that what God is able to bless, he can also curse. The same God who can open the heavens is the same God who can close it. Do we wish to have open skies, fertile land, and abundant fruit around our lives?

We must examine ourselves this morning and see our lives. We are trusting God or our own resources. It is easy at times to fall into the error that the people of Israel made. Let us ask the Lord to help us see the pride that can be in our hearts when we do not trust Him 100%. Begin your day praying to the Lord who helps you trust and depend on Him and not on something else. You need the heavens to open and the earth to yield its fruit! This is something that only God can do. Let us ask the Lord to break all pride that may be in our hearts.

Foundational Scriptures:

Deuteronomy 28:23 (NKJV) – 23 And your heavens which are over your head shall be bronze, and the earth which is under you shall be iron.

Psalms 10: 4 (NKJV) – 4 The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts.

Isaiah 2:12 (NKJV) – 12 For the day of the Lord of hosts Shall come upon everything proud and lofty, Upon everything lifted up— And it shall be brought low—

Jeremiah 13: 9 (NKJV) – 9 “Thus says the Lord: ‘In this manner I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem.

Daniel 4:37 (NKJV) – 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all of whose works are truth, and His ways justice. And those who walk in pride He is able to put down.
