To Proclaim Liberty to the Captives

Topic: We Are Called to Proclaim His Liberty

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,Because the Lord has anointed Me

To preach good tidings to the poor;He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,

To proclaim liberty to the captives….”

Isaiah 61:1 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

1 Timothy 1–6

Bible Versions:

Isaiah 61:1 (NLT) – The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed.

Isaiah 61:1 (NIV) – The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners….

Devotional Thought:

The prophet Isaiah pointed to a future when Jesus would bring freedom for all those bound by the chains of the enemy. His ministry was very sharp and clear: to proclaim liberty those who are imprisoned! As Isaiah 49:9 declares even, “That You may say to the prisoners, ‘Go forth,’ to those who are in darkness, ‘Show yourselves.’ They shall feed along the roads, and their pastures shall be on all desolate heights.” Glory to God! What a blessing to know that Jesus came to bring the good news to a humanity in need.

The message that we read this morning in the book of Isaiah is still one that the church should be preaching today. These words should be the center of all of our message to a humanity that finds itself in grave need. There are a multitude of people who are imprisoned in their own sins—people who for years have been in prisons of depression and affliction of the enemy. Many of them think that there is not one ounce of hope for their lives! The will of God is that they would not stay the same, but as 2 Timothy 2:26 tells us, “…that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.”

Our mission today is to continue to proclaim the freedom of the gospel amidst a world in darkness. We must take seriously the great responsibility that God has given us, a commission to proclaim freedom! The message is, “You do not have to live under the bondage of the enemy”; Jesus breaks the chains! I wonder: are we willing to proclaim this message? Can we hear the cry of those who find themselves bound? We must have an ear tuned by prayer to hear the cries, as Psalm 102:20 says: “To hear the groaning of the prisoner, to release those appointed to death….” The best that we can do, having been made free in Christ, is to carry this message of freedom to others.

Topical References:

Isaiah 42:6–7 (NKJV) — “I, the Lord, have called You in righteousness, and will hold Your hand;

I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, as a light to the Gentiles, to open blind eyes, to bring out prisoners from the prison, those who sit in darkness from the prison house.”

Luke 4:18 (NKJV) — “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed….”

Isaiah 49:24–25 (NKJV) — Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the captives of the righteous be delivered? But thus says the Lord: “Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible be delivered; for I will contend with him who contends with you, and I will save your children.”

Psalms 102:20 (NKJV) — To hear the groaning of the prisoner, to release those appointed to death….

2 Timothy 2:26 (NKJV) — …and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
