Let Us No Longer Be Tossed Like Children

Theme: To Grow, We Must Plant Ourselves and Take Root.

that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,

Ephesians 4:14 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan: New Testament in 90 Days

Colossians 1-4

Bible Versions:

Ephesians 4:14 (NIV) — 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.

Ephesians 4:14 (NLT) — 14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.

Devotional Thought:

It’s impossible to experience growth in our lives when we don’t take root and find ourselves shifting aimlessly without planting ourselves in a fixed place. The Apostle Paul reminds the Ephesians of the importance of not being moved or shaken by circumstances, people, or even the surrounding environment. He reminded them of the importance of having spiritual roots as Luke 8:13 says, “The seeds on the rocky soil represent those who hear the message and receive it with joy. But since they don’t have deep roots, they believe for a while, then they fall away when they face temptation.”

How are your roots this morning? Have you planted yourself and put down roots in the church and ministry where God has placed you? Have you reached a spiritual maturity where you understand that the size of your roots will determine the height of your spiritual growth? Be assured that things will come into your life to try to move you from your place, and at the end of the day, you might end up as a spiritual wanderer without ever establishing roots and bearing the fruit God requires from your life. That’s why 1 Corinthians 15:58 exhorts us, “So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.”

Spiritual stability and persistence are crucial for spiritual growth. Colossians 2:7 tells us, “Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” This morning, we cannot be swayed by our emotions or circumstances! Perhaps the things happening to us are meant for us to grow in character and reflect more of Christ in our lives. Today is the time to determine to grow and remain where God has placed us. If we plant ourselves and allow God to grow us through the process, then in due time, we will see the spiritual fruit we earnestly seek.

Key Scriptures:

1 Corinthians 14:20 (NKJV) — 20 Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature.

James 1:6 (NKJV) — 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.

Hebrews 13:9 (NKJV) — 9 Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them.

1 Corinthians 15:58 (NKJV) — 58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

Luke 8:13 (NKJV) — 13 But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.

Colossians 2:7 (NKJV) — 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.
