Thoughts of Devotion:

To see God’s provision, we can’t let failure stop us! This is one of the lessons that Peter and his disciples had to learn in order to see the miraculous catch. They had already tried to fish all night and couldn’t catch even one fish! Although they had labored and worked with the other fishermen all night, since that is the most suitable time for fishing, they had caught absolutely nothing. They had experienced a period of failure, their labor had been unproductive and useless, without fruit and without result!

Even though Peter, like the other disciples, were professional fishermen, they had to go through a process of insufficiency before experiencing God’s supernatural provision. It was a very humbling experience! Seeing that with all his knowledge and experience, his efforts yielded nothing in his favor. It reminds me of what Psalm 127:1–2 tells us, “Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep.”

Today we must recognize that we will never be able to obtain an abundant supply by ourselves. We are limited creatures! Even with everything we could acquire in this world: wisdom, strength, positions, everything would be useless without God’s help and guidance. The secret of supernatural provision lies in letting “our boat” be driven by Jesus, He is the only one who knows where all the fish are! Today we have to choose faith and action in his Word to experience a miracle of provision in our situation. Peter had to decide between acting like a professional fisherman, or an obedient disciple!

Today let us make the decision to be obedient disciples to his Word even when it is not the most logical path. We must learn that, in order to obtain our miraculous provision, logic versus faith and obedience will often not be the best option! Even when we have failed and it seems useless to cast the net again, we have to try again. When everything looks bad it’s time to get up and try one more time. If we do, God will provide the miraculous catch!

Foundational Scriptures:

John 21:3 — Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing.

Luke 6:46 — “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?

Psalms 33:9 — For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.

Hebrews 11:3 — By faith we understand that the [a]worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

  1. We need to put our trust in God. Without him, we can’t do anything. God is going to be our provider even when all seems lost.
