Thoughts of Devotion:
In this portion of the Scriptures we see how the people of Israel went through a moment where fear took possession of them. After experiencing a great defeat on the battlefield, their spirits faltered and they collapsed in front of their enemies! Joshua 7:5 tells us, “And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six men, for they chased them from before the gate as far as Shebarim, and struck them down on the descent; therefore the hearts of the people melted and became like water.” Fear and horror possessed them in the face of the crisis they were witnessing.
We can still see that Joshua wanted to give up for a moment, the situation was so difficult that he could only question God about what was happening. In Joshua 7:7–8 it tells us, “And Joshua said, “Alas, Lord God, why have You brought this people over the Jordan at all—to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Oh, that we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan! 8 O Lord, what shall I say when Israel turns its back before its enemies?” As a response to his questions God answers Joshua saying: “Get up, what are you doing prostrate!”
This is what the Holy Spirit tells us this morning, it is time to get up and not allow fear to dominate us! One cannot remain prostrate and paralyzed by what is happening around him. The solution is to return once more to God and humble yourself in his presence. We then read that God told Joshua “Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff.” (Joshua 7:11). The root was sin, for this reason their hearts fainted, it melted like wax in the heat of the sun and there was no more breath in them.
Today we can take back courage and bravery. It is possible to get up and seek the face of the Lord this morning. To humble ourselves, repent and be broken in his presence will restore us. Once again we will become strong and courageous men and women! If we remain in our situation of fear and spiritual paralysis nothing will happen. For this reason let us make the decision to get up and seek the face of the Lord. Only in this way will we be able to face the opposition that surrounds us with faith and security in God. Amen!
Exodus 14:15 (NKJV) — And the Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward.
1 Samuel 15:22 (NKJV) — So Samuel said: “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.
1 Chronicles 22:16 (NKJV) — Of gold and silver and bronze and iron there is no limit. Arise and begin working, and the Lord be with you.”
Joshua 7:20–21 (NKJV) — And Achan answered Joshua and said, “Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I have done: 21 When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it.”
