The Greatest Of These Is Love
Topic: Living In Our First Love Must Be Priority, Above All!
And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 13:13 (NKJV)
Daily Reading Plan
1 Corinthians 13:13 (MSG) — 13 13 But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of the three is love.
1 Corinthians 13:13 (NIV) — 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 13:13 (NLT) — 13 Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.
Thoughts of Devotion:
This morning we read in this portion of scripture how love is superior than the other two virtues of faith and hope. This makes it clear to us that both faith and hope will be fulfilled in the age to come. Because in eternity, we will no longer need faith because we will have full sight. We will no longer need hope because all of our expectations and anticipations will have been met and exceeded. But the love that will characterize our eternal relationship with God will continue because as 1 John 4:8 says, “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”
It is for this reason that living in our first love should be a priority for our lives. Without a doubt, when we have an intimate relationship with God the result will be that we will be overwhelmed by his love. This love of God will be evident in our lives and in our relationships with others, even with those who do us wrong! In Matthew 5:44 he tells us, “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.” It is only when we live in our first love with the Lord that we will be able to carry out this mandate that His Word gives us.
At the end of this age everything will cease, with the exception of love! In 1 Corinthians 13:7–8 it tells us that love, “bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.” Love should never cease to be reflected in our lives; first, towards God, and then, without a doubt, towards our neighbor. Let us pray this morning that we may always abound in love, a genuine and sincere love that flows from the heart of God, a love that we will only find when we return to our first love. Amen!
1 Corinthians 8:1 (NKJV) — 1 Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.
2 Corinthians 5:14–15 (NKJV) — 14 For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; 15 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.
1 Corinthians 16:14 (NKJV) — 14 Let all that you do be done with love.
Philippians 1:9 (NKJV) — 9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and morein knowledge and all discernment,
Colossians 3:14 (NKJV) — 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.
1 Timothy 1:5 (NKJV) — 5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith,
2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV) — 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
1 John 4:7–8 (NKJV) — 7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
2 John 6 (NKJV) — 6 This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.
1 Thessalonians 5:8 (NKJV) — 8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.
