Day 22: Saturday, January 22

Remember Therefore From Where You Have Fallen

Topic: The Need To Remember And Return To Our First Love.

Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.

Revelation 2:4–5 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

Exodus 11-13

Bible Versions:

Revelation 2:4–5 (NIV) — 4  Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.

Revelation 2:4–5 (MSG) — 4 “But you walked away from your first love—why? What’s going on with you, anyway? Do you have any idea how far you’ve fallen? A Lucifer fall! “Turn back! Recover your dear early love. No time to waste, for I’m well on my way to removing your light from the golden circle.

Thoughts of Devotion:

This morning the Lord implores the Ephesian church to take the time and remember their first love. The Holy Spirit exhorts them to come to themselves, to reflect, to consider their own state and return to the place where they left their first love. In Revelation 3:3 we read, “Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.” Remembering is always keeping something in mind, not forgetting, but keeping something in mind continuously.

Can you remember the moment you had your experience of salvation, the purity of a genuine conversion in the Lord? The joy, the enthusiasm, the fervor of a living relationship with God. A precious memory like the one the Psalmist expresses in Psalm 42:4, “When I remember these things, I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go with the multitude; I went with them to the house of God, With the voice of joy and praise, With a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast.” It’s these sacred memories that the Holy Spirit invites us to remember, memories that we must never forget!

Today we cannot be satisfied with our spiritual condition. We must always have a reference point of our beginnings in the Lord. We always need to reflect on the passion, the joy and exhilaration that we experienced in our first steps in the Lord, when we enjoyed the presence and intimate communion with Him! In Ezekiel 20:43 he tells us, “And there you shall remember your ways and all your doings with which you were defiled; and you shall loathe yourselves in your own sight because of all the evils that you have committed.” Today, let’s take a moment and walk that old path that will lead us to our first love. If we have failed the Lord, He offers us His forgiveness and mercy! Amen

Foundational Scriptures:

Jeremiah 2:2 (NKJV) — 2 “Go and cry in the hearing of Jerusalem, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord: “I remember you, The kindness of your youth, The love of your betrothal, When you went after Me in the wilderness, In a land not sown.

Hebrews 10:32 (NKJV) — 32 But recall the former days in which, after you were illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings:

Matthew 24:12 (NKJV) — 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.

Hosea 14:1 (NKJV) — 1 O Israel, return to the Lord your God, For you have stumbled because of your iniquity;

Revelation 3:3 (NKJV) — 3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.

Ezekiel 20:43 (NKJV) — 43 And there you shall remember your ways and all your doings with which you were defiled; and you shall loathe yourselves in your own sight because of all the evils that you have committed.

2 Peter 1:12 (NKJV) — 12  For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know and are established in the present truth.
