Should No Longer Be Children
Topic: To Grow We Need To Plant Ourselves And Make Deep Roots.
that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,
Ephesians 4:14 (NKJV)
Daily Reading Plan
2 Chronicles 21-24
Ephesians 4:14 (MSG) — 14 No prolonged infancies among us, please. We’ll not tolerate babes in the woods, small children who are an easy mark for impostors. God wants us to grow up, to know the whole truth and tell it in love—like Christ in everything.
Ephesians 4:14 (NLT) — 14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.
Thoughts Of Devotion:
It’s impossible to experience growth in our lives when we don’t have roots and are running to and fro without planting ourselves in a fixed location. The Apostle Paul reminded the Ephesians the importance of not being moved or shaken by circumstances, people, or even by the environment around them. They recalled the importance of spiritual roots like it says in Luke 8:13, ” But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.”
In this morning, how are your roots? Have you planted and rooted yourself in the church and ministry that God has placed you in? Have you reached spiritual maturity where you realize that the size of your roots will determine the height of spiritual growth in your life? Rest assure that things will come into your life to move you from your place and at the end of the day have you end up as a spiritual vagabond without ever having placed your roots somewhere stable were you can give fruit that God asks from your life. It is for this reason that 1 Corinthians 15:58 saying exhorts us, ” Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”
Stability and spiritual persistence is so important for attaining spiritual growth. In Colossians 2:7 it tells us, “rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.” This morning we cannot be moved by our emotions or circumstances! Possibly the things we are going through are to grow in our character and reflect Christ more in our lives. Today is the time to be determined to grow and remain where God has placed us. If we plant and let God grow us in the process then over time we will see the spiritual fruit that we seek.
1 Corinthians 14:20 (NKJV) — 20 Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature.
James 1:6 (NKJV) — 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.
Hebrews 13:9 (NKJV) 9 Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them
1 Corinthians 15:58 (NKJV) — 58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
Luke 8:13 (NKJV) — 13 But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.
Colossians 2:7 (NKJV) — 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.
