Thoughts of Devotion:

Looking at the temptation of Jesus we see that he spent a period of four days in the desert. During this period he was tempted by the devil. The number 40 has generally been thought of as referring to a trial period in the Bible. In Luke 4: 2 he tells us that, “being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.” The Gospel of Luke clearly states that Jesus was tempted during the 40 days of fasting as well as after the three different occasions that we read in the story of the temptation.

So one can conclude that Jesus was tempted throughout the forty days in the desert, the period of temptation for Jesus was persistent and long! It was in the desert of temptation that Jesus had to fight his greatest battles against the devil. He had to fight this battle alone, in the solitude of the desert. It was there on the battlefield where Jesus had to defeat the devil without crowds or an audience! In Mark 1:13 he tells us that it was just him and Santan, “And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him.”

This lesson is one that we will all have to learn to become more than conquerors. We must be willing to face the greatest struggles against the forces of the enemy and fight them for ourselves. No one else will be able to fight our personal battles. It is our responsibility to take our own victory for ourselves in the power of the Holy Spirit. God has given us his armor to overcome in the middle of our desert of temptation. In Ephesians 6:11 he tells us, ” Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Let us never doubt that just as Jesus defeated the enemy in the testing desert, we too will emerge more than conquerors!

Job 1: 7 (NKJV) – 7 And the Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” So Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”
