being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.

Luke 4: 2 (NKJV)

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

1 Peter 5: 8 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

1 Kings 19-21

Bible Versions:

Luke 4:2 (NLT) – 8 where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.

1 Peter 5:8 (NLT) Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

Thoughts of Devotion:

If we are to be more than conquerors it is important to learn the way the enemy assaults the life of the believer. He continually walks like a roaring lion trying to find a way to bring us down so that we are victims of his traps. In the temptation of Jesus we see the opportune moments that the enemy uses to come to seduce us into falling into his traps. We can see at least three occasions:

1. The enemy comes to tempt us after an experience of great spiritual blessing and prosperity. It was immediately after his baptism in the Jordan that we read that Christ was tempted. After the great honors that God grants us, we must be vigilant and alert to the attacks of the enemy.

2. Temptations and trials often come before further ministry. Before receiving a fresh anointing and/or reaching new ministerial stages. We see that Jesus was about to enter into his ministry as Messiah, Saviour, the mission of the Father here on earth, but he first had to be tested!

3. The Tempter will certainly come to us during periods of great weakness, it may be physical as well as spiritual. We see that the devil did not tempt Jesus until the moment that he was hungry! Jesus was not tempted in the temple or at his baptism, but in the desert. It is there that he was tired, lonely and hungry, and therefore very vulnerable. Satan often tempts us when we are vulnerable: when we are tired, lonely, facing important decisions or uncertainty.

What lessons will we have to learn to overcome temptations. It will be necessary for you and I to be alert to fight and to overcome temptations at all times. Let us be assured and without a doubt that the enemy will look for the moment that we are most vulnerable to incite us to fall into his trap. That is why we need to arm ourselves. Ephesians 6: 10–11 tells us, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” This battle is personal, it is real and it is your victory that you have to take in 2021. Amen!

Foundational Scriptures:

1 Peter 1:13 (NKJV) – 13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

Job 1: 7 (NKJV) – 7 And the Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” So Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”

John 8:44 (NKJV) – 44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

Ephesians 4:27 (NKJV) – 27 nor give place to the devil.

Ephesians 6:11 (NKJV) – 11  Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the [a]wiles of the devil.

Matthew 4: 1 (NKJV) – 1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
