I Have Prayed For You

Fifth Principle: We Will Experience Opposition To Our Intercession, Because What The Enemy Seeks To Destroy Is Our Faith!

And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”

Luke 22: 31–32 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

Deuteronomy 23-26

Bible Versions:

Luke 22: 31–32 (NLT) – 31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. 32 But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”

Luke 22: 31–32 (MSG) – 31 “Simon, stay on your toes. Satan has tried his best to separate all of you from me, like chaff from wheat. Simon, I’ve prayed for you in particular that you not give in or give out. When you have come through the time of testing, turn to your companions and give them a fresh start.”

Luke 22: 31–32 (NIV) – 31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

Thoughts of Devotion:

As Christians we understand how real the enemy’s attacks are. He continually comes against our lives with his arsenal to attack us in any way possible. We as believers must always be on the alert in intercessory prayer for this invisible but real war. The Apostle Peter warns us of the importance to “be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” (1 Peter 5: 8) What a real description of what we face, a roaring lion! He wants us to be his prey today. His plan is very real and his fight against us will not rest.

We see in this Scripture how the Apostle Peter experienced one of his greatest attacks from the enemy as a disciple of Jesus. Our Lord warned him that the devil wanted to shake him like wheat. His life was to be tested in a great and real way. Reading this I wonder, why is the enemy so interested in attacking us? What is the end or target of it? What can there be inside of us that he wants? I conclude that it would have to be only one thing, our faith! What he’s after is our faith. One way or another, his goal is to destroy our faith and trust in God.

Our faith is something very valuable and the enemy wishes that when we see the intensity of the trial, we would lose our faith and trust in God. In 1 Peter 1: 7 he reminds us of how valuable our faith is, “that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” Let’s pray this morning that we can keep and protect our faith when the enemy comes to want to destroy it. Our faith in the Lord is the most valuable thing we can have! When the enemy wants to come to shake us like wheat to move us from our firmness in God, let’s hold onto God in prayer and search for Him. God will never fail us, he will give us the strength we need to endure the test!

Foundational Scriptures:

Daniel 10:19 (NKJV) – And he said, “O man greatly beloved, fear not! Peace be to you; be strong, yes, be strong!” So when he spoke to me I was strengthened, and said, “Let my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.”

Psalm 34: 4 (NKJV) – I sought the Lord, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears.

Isaiah 35: 4 (NKJV) – Say to those who are fearful-hearted, “Be strong, do not fear! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, With the recompense of God; He will come and save you.”

Isaiah 41:10 (NKJV) – Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’

2 Timothy 1: 7 (NKJV) –  For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

1 Thessalonians 2:18 (NKJV) – Therefore we wanted to come to you—even I, Paul, time and again—but Satan hindered us.

Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV) – For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

1 Timothy 2: 1–2 (NKJV) – Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.
