Thoughts of Devotion:
To see growth and expansion in our lives in the year 2021 we must be willing to go through the process that God has prepared for each of us. This process is far from easy, and it does not happen overnight! It takes time and our duty is to persevere to see the work of the Holy Spirit in us. In Philippians 1: 6 he tells us, “being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete ituntil the day of Jesus Christ.” The Lord never leaves the process halfway, he promises to finish it in us!
We learn that this had to happen in Jabez’s life for God to expand his territory. Since his birth, his mother called him “pain and anguish.” The Bible shows us that the names summed up the characteristics of the person and often indicated their destiny. In the ancient East, names were often associated with a person’s character or with a desirable or undesirable destiny. This being the case, Jabez’ future did not seem bright since his name was Pain and Anguish. Perhaps this was the reason that he turned to God, knowing that only He could change his destiny and future!
For some of us it is very easy to relate to the life of Jabez. There are many of us that our future did not look good at all. Our birth was under very difficult situations to later grow up in a dysfunctional family surrounded by problems. But thank God that he draws life from death, he draws blessings from pain and success from failure, our past does not determine our future! In 2 Corinthians 5:17 he tells us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” Today we have a new destiny, a glorious future in Christ, anticipating all that he has planned for 2021!
For the work of the Holy Spirit continues in us after our salvation. The process of growth and expansion will not be easy, but it is certainly necessary to see God expand our lives! In Psalm 4: 1 he tells us, “Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.” It is important to stay still and not be moved in the midst of everything that is happening to us. The trials, struggles and difficult moments that come into our lives will only propel us towards the glorious destiny that God has prepared. If we remain firm, we can be sure that our territory will expand in 2021! Amen.
