Topic: To bear fruit and see expansion, it will take to discard greed and deception.
Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.
Matthew 13:22 (NKJV)
Daily Reading Plan
[NIV] The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.
[MSG] “The seed cast in the weeds is the person who hears the kingdom news, but weeds of worry and illusions about getting more and wanting everything under the sun strangle what was heard, and nothing comes of it.
[NLT] The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced.
Thoughts of Devotion:
This morning we continue in the Parable of the Sower. We now see the third ground, the seed was sown among the thorns, this ground did not produce fruit! Thorns are those things that “choke” the Word of God, or cause a person to become insensitive to spiritual things. It is interesting since the thorny terrain is a very deceptive soil. It tends to look nice and clean on the surface; seemingly free of weeds and thorns, but it’s not! Just below the surface of the soil is a chain of roots ready to sprout.
This becomes a problem since the fact that the roots are already there means that the thorns will be stronger and grow faster than the good seed! And as a result they choke the seed of all life, and bears no fruit. This describes those believers who allow the greed and deception of this world to dominate them. They become so entangled in the world that they have no room for the most important thing, their spiritual growth! In 2 Timothy 2: 4 the Apostle Paul warned us of this, “No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.”
Today we must be careful not to fall into the worries of this world and the deception of wealth. If we let these things dominate us in the year 2021, our life will become fruitless and barren! Nothing in this world should separate us from being connected to the true vine that is Jesus. The eagerness and deception of this world and its riches is something insecure that sooner or later will bring dissolution to our lives. Let’s pay attention to what Proverbs 23: 5 tells us, “Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagletoward heaven.” Let us cast off in 2021 all toil and deception and diligently seek to be good ground, which produces fruit a hundred, sixty-thirty times over!
