Topic: To Bear Fruit And See Expansion, It Will Take Diligence And Spiritual Vigilance.
When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside.
Matthew 13:19 (NKJV)
Daily Reading Plan
NIV – When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path.
NLT – The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the message about the Kingdom and don’t understand it. Then the evil one comes and snatches away the seed that was planted in their hearts.
MSG – When anyone hears news of the kingdom and doesn’t take it in, it just remains on the surface, and so the Evil One comes along and plucks it right out of that person’s heart. This is the seed the farmer scatters on the road.
Thoughts of Devotion:
In these next few days we will be seeing the parable of the Sower. In this story Jesus gives us a lesson on how we should be bearing fruit and spiritual growth. The goal is that we can be a good soil as Matthew 13:23 tells us, “But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it,who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.“ Jesus shows us that the heart is similar to the four different grounds that are explained in the parable. In other words, the seed is the same, but the ground would determine the fruit that will be produced.
The seed that was sown along the road describes the believer who hears the word, but does not understand it for lack of paying attention. These types of believers are curious, they listen, but they are not serious about their spiritual growth! They may listen, but they don’t really hear with their heart, they are easily distracted and forget what they heard. In Hebrews 2: 1 he exhorts us by saying, “Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.” We must understand that it is only by paying attention and having a genuine interest that we will see the seed bear fruit in us.
In this year 2021, we cannot let laziness, comfort and spiritual indifference open the door for the devil to steal our seed. The enemy is busy with the work of snatching or taking away. He gets into the spiritual realm and like a bandit steals the seed before it begins to sprout in our hearts. In 1 Peter 5: 8 the Apostle Peter warns us, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” There are some of us who are ignorant of how the devil fights so that we do not grow and mature in the things of God.
He is enemy #1 in our spiritual growth! He has no problem with cold, anemic, and indifferent Christians. His problem is with Christians who are determined to grow and advance in their spiritual life. His plan is to devour the seed so that we don’t see fruit in our lives. For this reason we must determine ourselves to be diligent in our spiritual development and fight the spiritual battle against the enemy. The Holy Spirit calls us to be vigilant and sober, only then will we see the expansion in 2021!
