Thoughts of Devotion:
This morning we can learn that Abel’s offering pleased God because it was made in faith. He believed that God was worthy of the best sacrifice! By reading this text more closely we can see that God was very pleased with the offering that Abel offered unto him. But the text says that Jehovah first looked at Abel and then at his offering. Abel’s life, his lifestyle of faith resulted in a pleasant offering to God. We are able to see that more than the actual sacrifice, what really pleased God was the life of faith of Abel who offered the sacrifice.
In Psalm 51: 16–17 he tells us, “For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it;You do not delight in burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God area broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise.” The genuine faith that pleases God is one that is lived out daily, a person that is broken, obedient and with a humble heart before the Lord. What made Abel offer more excellent sacrifice than Cain was not for what he offered, but for the heart and internal motives he had for God. No doubt God looked beyond the offering, the giver and his life of worship. He sees both our motives and the quality of what we offer before him.
Today we must understand that faith is not only a series of things we do for God, but it is a life we live in faith! It’s a journey where we continually inquire about how to please God from the heart, with the right reasons. This was not Cain’s condition, behind his offering there was no life of faith that pleased God. In 1 John 3:12 he tells us, “not as Cain whowas of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were eviland his brother’s righteous.” In this year 2020 if we decide to live our faith internally, God will be pleased with everything we do for Him!
Isaiah 1:11 (NKJV) – 11 To what purposeisthe multitude of your sacrifices to Me?” Says the Lord. “I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams And the fat of fed cattle. I do not delight in the blood of bulls, Or of lambs or goats.
Proverbs 21:27 (NKJV) – 27 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination; How much more when he brings it with wicked intent!
Genesis 4: 3–5 (NKJV) – 3 And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. 4 Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, 5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
1 John 3:12 (NKJV) – 12 not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.
Genesis 4: 9 (NKJV) – 9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother? He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
