Topic: Faith Always Offers The Best For God, He Is Worthy Of The Highest Honor And Excellence!
By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks.
Hebrews 11: 4 (NKJV)
Daily Reading Plan
[NLT] It was by faith that Abel brought a more acceptable offering to God than Cain did. Abel’s offering gave evidence that he was a righteous man, and God showed his approval of his gifts. Although Abel is long dead, he still speaks to us by his example of faith.
[NIV] By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.
[MSG] 4 By an act of faith, Abel brought a better sacrifice to God than Cain. It was what he believed, not what he brought, that made the difference. That’s what God noticed and approved as righteous. After all these centuries, that belief continues to catch our notice.
Thoughts of Devotion:
This morning we can study the first example of a genuine faith recorded in the Book of Hebrews. It was by faith that Abel offered an excellent sacrifice, an offering of great value and most acceptable to God. In Genesis 4: 3–5 he gives us more detail of this faith action on the part of Abel, “And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.”
Abel’s offering was pleasing to God because he offered the firstborn of his sheep and the fattest of them. Abel’s faith acted in such a way that he brought the most excellent, he offered the best to God! This was a sweet aroma to God as Numbers 18:17 tells us, “But the firstborn of a cow, the firstborn of a sheep, or the firstborn of a goat you shall not redeem; they are holy. You shall sprinkle their blood on the altar, and burn their fat as an offering made by fire for a sweet aroma to the Lord.” God put his divine approval on Abel’s faith through his sacrificial offering.
In this year 2020 we must act in our faith, giving God the best of our lives! A genuine and sincere faith always recognizes who one serves and understands that God is always worthy to receive everything with excellence. This was more of the same attitude and recognition that King David possesses in 1 Chronicles 21:24, “Then King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will surely buy it for the full price, for I will not take what is yours for the Lord, nor offer burnt offerings with that which costs me nothing.” Let’s take the challenge this morning to grow in our faith, to have a clear perspective of the God we serve.
Genesis 4: 3–5 (NKJV) – 3 And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. 4 Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, 5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
Exodus 29:13 (NKJV) – 13 And you shall take all the fat that covers the entrails, the fatty lobe attached to the liver, and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, and burn them on the altar.
Leviticus 3:16 (NKJV) – 16 and the priest shall burn them on the altar as food, an offering made by fire for a sweet aroma; all the fat is the Lord’s.
Numbers 18:12 (NKJV) – 12 All the best of the oil, all the best of the new wine and the grain, their firstfruits which they offer to the Lord, I have given them to you.
Numbers 18:17 (NKJV) – 17 But the firstborn of a cow, the firstborn of a sheep, or the firstborn of a goat you shall not redeem; they are holy. You shall sprinkle their blood on the altar, and burn their fat as an offering made by fire for a sweet aroma to the Lord.
Hebrews 9:22 (NKJV) – 22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.
1 Peter 1: 19–20 (NKJV) – 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. 20 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you
Psalm 20: 3 (NKJV) – 3 May He remember all your offerings, And accept your burnt sacrifice. Selah
