Topic: You don’t have because you don’t ask the Father.
You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask.
James 4: 2 (NKJV)
Read the Bible in a year
James 4: 2 (NIV) – 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.
James 4: 2 (NLT) – 2 You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it.
James 4: 2 (MSG) – 2 You lust for what you don’t have and are willing to kill to get it. You want what isn’t yours and will risk violence to get your hands on it. You wouldn’t think of just asking God for it, would you?
Thoughts of Devotion:
Have you ever wondered, why don’t you have what you desire? Here James teaches us that as believers sometimes we don’t have because of the simple fact that we do not ask. In Matthew 7: 7–8 Jesus tells us, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” The key this morning is to have faith to approach God in prayer. He is our Father and is more than willing to listen to our request, and give us what we want as his children!
The danger this morning is when we try to get things done by ourselves and in our own way. James says, “You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it.You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it.” (James 4: 2 (NTV) How sad it is as believers to live in these conditions. Today there is no need to strive to achieve what we want so much in this world. This is one of the most serious mistakes we can make as believers.
God on this day promises to give us what we ask. In Matthew 7:11, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! Prayer has power, there is no need to try to get things our way! At the end of the day we will end up frustrated and tired without seeing favorable results. Today is the time to seek God and come to Him with our wants and desires. Let us not live another day limited without being able to reach the great plans that God has for our future, it is time to break down barriers and experience all that God has promised us!
Let us remember this promise in 1 John 3:22, “And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.” Do not take the greatness of our God in little, He can and He wants to do great things in your life! Just align to His plans and purposes for your life. Today is the time to see results, to experience the success that can only be achieved in prayer. Amen!
James 1: 5 (NKJV) – 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
Matthew 7: 7–8 (NKJV) – 7 Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
John 4:10 (KJV) – 10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
John 16:24 (NKJV) – 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
John 9:31 (NKJV) – 31 Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.
