Thoughts of Devotion:
Only the Holy Spirit can enable us to love with a genuine and true love. The love that the Spirit goes beyond the conditional mutual or corresponding love. Surely sometimes we have to love even when we do not receive love from others. In Matthew 5: 43-44 tells us, ““You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.” It’s in these situations that one is able to see if indeed we are walk in the Spirit!
The fruit of love that the Holy Spirit produces in our lives always goes beyond the love that a human heart can produce. We must understand that in our own strength we will never be able to fulfill this commandment, love my enemies and bless those who curse me! One reads this and it is clear that it’s the opposite of all logic, the entire contrary on how any normal people respond and treat others. This is a radical change, a new commandment as John 13:34 tells us, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.”
When we walk in the Spirit we will experience another level of love in our hearts. We are be filled with a supernatural love, a love that only God can give us towards our neighbor. Because it is impossible to say that we love God when we hate our brother as 1 John 4: 20-21 reminds us, “20 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.”
I pray this morning that we may be a genuine expression of the love of God towards others here on earth. This world is in need of a divine love, a love that transforms even the most harsh and cruel heart. The Holy Spirit longs to produce this fruit in us if only we yield our will Him. It’s possible to love those who have mistreated, insulted and offended us! The Holy Spirit enables us to bear fruit of His divine love in us.
1 Corinthians 8:3 (NKJV) 3 But if anyone loves God, this one is known by Him.
Romans 8:28 (NKJV) 28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
1 John 4:19-21 (NKJV) 19 We love Him[a] because He first loved us. 20 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can[b] he love God whom he has not seen? 21 And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.
