Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!
Read the Bible in a year
John 4:35 (NTV) – 35 You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe[a] for harvest.
John 4:35 (MSG) – 35 As you look around right now, wouldn’t you say that in about four months it will be time to harvest? Well, I’m telling you to open your eyes and take a good look at what’s right in front of you. These Samaritan fields are ripe. It’s harvest time!
John 4:35 (NIV) – 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
Thoughts of Devotion:
As we read this portion of the scriptures we see how Jesus was faced with a great challenge, to be able to see that the disciples understood the urgency of preaching the gospel! For Jesus, the vision of the white fields and ready to harvest was very clear. But the disciples weren’t even aware of the timing, God’s (kairos) time! That is, the right time, adequate, a time to harvest like no other. It was the divine time of God, a unique opportunity, a time of open doors! In the words of the Apostle Paul, “For a great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.” (1 Corinthians 16: 9).
In Jesus’ clock there weren’t four months left, the crowds were ready to enter the kingdom of God! This was what Jesus said to his disciples, but they did not understand it, they did not grasp the spiritual language, they did not have the discernment of the times! They were doing other things, instead of the most important. We read in John 4: 8, “For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.” They were having lunch; They were taking an afternoon nap. They had gone to eat, while Jesus carried out the mission and the task entrusted to him by his Father.
On this day, if we are going to take the opportunity in front of us, a passion will be required in us, an urgency to evangelize! Jesus said in John 4: 33-34, “Therefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?”Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.” There is another more important meal, and it is a vision to reach the world! We cannot leave this for another time. Today is the time to announce the good news. This is the moment that we have anticipated so much, we cannot miss it. We cannot miss this opportunity, the ears of grain are ripe, the fields are ready!
Mark 1:15 (NKJV) – 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
Matthew 9: 37–38 (NKJV) – 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 38 Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”
Acts 8: 5–6 (NKJV) – 5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. 6 And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.
Proverbs 10: 5 (NKJV) – 5 He who gathers in summer is a wise son; He who sleeps in harvest is a son who causes shame.
