Galatians 5:22-23 (NASB) 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Self control is the last aspect of the fruit of the Holy Spirit in the book of Galatians. Self control is the inner quality of the Holy Spirit that induces us to use or do things in moderation. The word self control comes from a Greek word meaning to have strength, self-control and ability to control thoughts and control actions. The Holy Scriptures say: “5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.”(Romans 8:5). Then temperance, self-control, as the fruit of the Spirit, must be the normal exercise of the Christian’s life.
Each day our life will be faced with the temptation of excess, the world is full of uncontrolled desires. It is only with the help of the Holy Spirit that we can overcome the abuse and excess of things in this world. Without the Holy Spirit we could never have control of ourselves, or self-control that is so necessary to avoid falling into sin. The fruit of the Holy Spirit, His self-control gives us the strength and ability to be moderate in everything we do, without falling into an indiscipline life in our spiritual life!
To obtain a successful spiritual life requires divine self-control. It is through the Holy Spirit that we can master our spirit. It was King Solomon who wrote: “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city. “(Proverbs 16:32). Self control is essential to walk in the Holy Spirit; without it we will fail! We will fall into the sin, unable to restrain ourselves from doing evil. Thank you, Holy Spirit, who gives us the ability to have strength and self-control amid a world full of temptations.
