(TLA) “I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. Be as wary as serpents and harmless as doves.
(MSG)16 “Stay alert. This is hazardous work I’m assigning you. You’re going to be like sheep running through a wolf pack, so don’t call attention to yourselves. Be as cunning as a snake, inoffensive as a dove.
Jesus’ warning to his disciples was, walk with wisdom and in humbleness! It was very clear that the journey was not going to be easy; it was a road full of dangers, persecution and attacks. We read in Luke 10: 2-3, “Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves.” Jesus’ mission would be like walking among ferocious wolves, living daily with hostility from the enemy!
It is under these circumstances that we have to be prudent, sensible and cautious like snakes if we are going to survive and walk in victory. But at the same time we must remain humble, harmless and innocent as doves. In Philippians 2:15 the Apostle Paul puts it this way, “that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.” It requires discernment beyond our own knowledge and wisdom. We will never get to this, just by chance or luck!
It is only through the work of the Holy Spirit in us that we can be prudent and simple in the midst of a world full of wolves that harasses us. It is only through the discernment given by the Holy Spirit that we will not fall into the traps and deceptions of the enemy. In Ephesians 5: 15-17 he warns us, “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” We pray this morning that today we can be filled with the Holy Spirit, that he enables us to triumph over the attacks and tricks of the enemy!
