Acts 1:8 (NLT)- 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 1:8 (MSG) 8He told them, What you’ll get is the Holy Spirit. And when the Holy Spirit comes on you, you will be able to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, all over Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the world.”
What a special promise Jesus disciples received, one of power! They were to be transformed to other people when the Holy Spirit descended upon their lives. The power of the Holy Spirit would give them the strength to give testimony of Him. Their preaching was not only one of words, but of power as 1 Thessalonians 1: 5 tells us, “For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.” They possessed a gospel of power, a gospel that transformed lives.
To fulfill the task of evangelizing it would take more than talent, or natural ability, this would be ineffective on their own! They needed to be gifted with the power from above. Their hearts were going to burn with the fire and the passion of Jesus. Acts 4:33 tells us this: “And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.” The power given by the Holy Spirit was not given to make a spectacle, Or to show it off to others, it was to preach and impact lives! The mission of Jesus required of this power, it was necessary to have spiritual training.
Today we also need this power, without it, it will be impossible to fulfill the mission of evangelizing! More than anything else we need to be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. Let us remember the words of the Prophet Zechariah: “Then he answered and said to me, ‘This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel, who says:” Not by might or by force, but by my Spirit, “says the Lord of Host.” (Zechariah 4: 6). There is urgency in taking this word seriously, without the power of the Holy Spirit we will not succeed in the task of evangelizing! The work of evangelization in our city and community would be dead and without progress if is not through the Holly Spirit.
Let us pray this morning that we can renew our spiritual strength; may the Spirit fill us with power and courage to leave the four walls of the church and proclaim the gospel; with courage, surrender, trust, and authority! The harvest is great, the mission is enormous, and it will require men and women saturated and submerged in the fire of the Holy Spirit.
