Topic: The Process Of God, Is Better Than The Short Way!
17 Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” So God led the people around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. And the children of Israel went up in orderly ranks out of the land of Egypt.

2 Thessalonians 1-3
Exodus 13:17-18(NIV) – 17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.
Exodus 13:17-18 (NLT) – 17 When Pharaoh finally let the people go, God did not lead them along the main road that runs through Philistine territory, even though that was the shortest route to the Promised Land. God said, “If the people are faced with a battle, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led them in a roundabout way through the wilderness toward the Red Sea. Thus the Israelites left Egypt like an army ready for battle.
Exodus 13:17-18 (MSG) – 17 It so happened that after Pharaoh released the people, God didn’t lead them by the road through the land of the Philistines, which was the shortest route, for God thought, “If the people encounter war, they’ll change their minds and go back to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people on the wilderness road, looping around to the Red Sea. The Israelites left Egypt in military formation.
Thoughts Of Devotion:
The long road is often the best road we should take. The direct route is not always God’s will for our situation or dilemma. We see this example when God took Israel out of Egypt and led them down a longer path to avoid an aggressive encounter with the Philistines. The people of Israel were not trained, nor were they ready to face such a trial and difficult situation, their faith was still very weak and they were not prepared! That is why 1 Corinthians 10:13 teaches us how God does not allow us to be tempted any more than we can handle, “No temptation has overtaken you other than human; but God is faithful, who will not let you be tempted beyond what you can resist, but will also give with the temptation the way out, so that you can endure. “
Sometimes it is difficult to understand how the journey of the desert is the path that leads us to the land of promise. In Deuteronomy 8:2 he tells us, “And you will remember all the way that the LORD your God has brought you these forty years in the wilderness, to afflict you, to test you, to know what was in your heart, if you were to keep or not his commandments.” It is in the process of God that things occasionally seem long and meaningless, that our character, our spiritual maturity is being formed! God’s plan is not necessarily our happiness, but to be form us more in the image of His Son Jesus Christ.
Today we may be going through a process that we do not understand. We see the land of promise so close, but we do not seem to arrive! It seems as if this journey will never take us to what God has promised us. It is at times like these that we should trust and maintain our firmness in God. Never forget that the short way, is not always the best way! There are lessons to be learned, areas of our character that we must grow before reaching our destination. Just trust God, he takes care of you, if you allow him he will always lead you to the land of promise! In Deuteronomy 32:10 states, “He found him in a desert land, and in the waste of horrible loneliness; He brought it around, instructed him, He kept us as the apple of his eye.” God will always keep you in the process, he will take care of you as the apple of his eye. Amen!
