As One Speaks To a Friend

Topic: A Friendship with God

So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle.

Exodus 33:11 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

2 Chronicles 32-33

Bible Versions:

Exodus 33:11 (MSG)-11 And God spoke with Moses face-to-face, as neighbors speak to one another. When he would return to the camp, his attendant, the young man Joshua, stayed—he didn’t leave the Tent.

Exodus 33:11New International Version (NIV)-11 The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.

Exodus 33:11 (NLT)-11 Inside the Tent of Meeting, the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Afterward Moses would return to the camp, but the young man who assisted him, Joshua son of Nun, would remain behind in the Tent of Meeting.

Devotional Thoughts:

This morning we see this portion of Scripture where the servant Moses enjoyed a unique and special friendship with God. Even in Deuteronomy 34:10 it says, “But since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face,” Moses was the greatest among the prophets in his personal relationship with God. He made history as being a friend of God, one who spoke face to face with Him! We must understand that the expression “Face to face” is an expression of language that points towards a friendship and openness in communication.

Moses revealed himself with great clarity and light. In Numbers 12: 8 he tells us, ” I speak with him face to face, Even plainly, and not in dark sayings; And he sees the form of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid To speak against My servant Moses?” This was the root of his friendship and intimacy with God. The fact that God spoke to him face to face, was that there was no obstacle between them! It was a close and transparent friendship. The intimate relationship with God was a true privilege for Moses, out of reach for the other Hebrews of that time!

This should inspire us t to seek this relationship and  friendship with God. It is time to seek the Holy Spirit so that we can enjoy His presence in our lives. In Exodus 33: 14-15 it says, “ And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Then he said to Him, “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.”  If your presence is not to go with me, do not get us out of here.” When we have a friendship with God, we will experience his presence every day! We will live safe, without fear of tomorrow because our best friend the Holy Spirit is with us.
