Abram’s friendship with God was very special. It was a relationship based on faith, trust, and obedience. It was on these three pillars that Abram’s relationship with God was sustained. We read in Hebrews 11: 8-9 that, ” By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise;” It was on the basis of Abraham’s faith and action that God honored him by calling him friend.
For Abram God was his best friend, all his affection and his love was only for Him! There was a genuine friendship between them. There was nothing hidden from Abram because of the genuine and sincere relationship he had with God. In Genesis 18: 17-18 we are told, “And the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? ” Between true friends everything is shared: hopes, dreams, and desires. There is a transparency and trust between real friends.
Today we are invited to enjoy this communion with God. Through our intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit we can have a friendship with Him. We can be lovers of God, passionate for His presence! Even the Holy Spirit yearns for this friendship with each one of us individually, as James 4: 5 says, ” Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?” Does the Spirit that dwells in us yearn jealously? ” Let us take the initiative to invest in our friendship with God, let us have the Holy Spirit as our best friend!
