Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

1 Corinthians 10:14 (NKJV)

And do not become idolaters, as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.”

1 Corinthians 10: 7 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

2 Chronicles 1-5

Bible Versions:

1 John 5:21 (NLT)-21 Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.[a]

1 Corinthians 10:14 (NLT)-14 So, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols.

1 Corinthians 10:7 (NLT)-or worship idols as some of them did. As the Scriptures say, “The people celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.”

Devotional Thoughts:

The Bible continues to exhort us not to have idols. From the Old Testament we can see that worship of everything, apart from God, is completely forbidden! In Psalm 115: 4-8 he describes the falsehood of the idols, “ Their idols are silver and gold, The work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; Eyes they have, but they do not see; They have ears, but they do not hear; Noses they have, but they do not smell; They have hands, but they do not handle; Feet they have, but they do not walk; Nor do they mutter through their throat. Those who make them are like them; So is everyone who trusts in them.  But we must realize that there are also idols that can exist in our hearts.

Things that if we allow, will take the first place in our lives, things that become great idols after a while! It is these things the Bible teaches us, that we must make ourselves die within us. In Colossians 3: 5 it says, ” Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” These are things that we must flee and never allow our hearts to dominate. An idol is all that occupies the place of devotion and service that we should only give to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

This morning it is time to examine our hearts and ask the Holy Spirit to remove every idol we may have. The Holy Spirit does not share his dwelling place, there is no place for idolatry and the temple of God as taught by 2 Corinthians 6:16, “ And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be My people.” “It is time to overthrow those things that are not pleasing to God, and to allow the Holy Spirit to be the center of everything we do in this life.

Foundational Scriptures:

Leviticus 26:1New King James Version (NKJV)-26 You shall not make idols for yourselves; neither a carved image nor a sacred pillar shall you rear up for yourselves; nor shall you set up an engraved stone in your land, to bow down to it; for I am the Lord your God.

2 Corinthians 6:16 (NKJV)-16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you[a] are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.”

Deuteronomy 7:5 (NKJV)-But thus you shall deal with them: you shall destroy their altars, and break down their sacred pillars, and cut down their wooden images,[a] and burn their carved images with fire.

2 Kings 23:4 (NKJV)-And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, the priests of the second order, and the doorkeepers, to bring out of the temple of the Lord all the articles that were made for Baal, for Asherah,[a] and for all the host of heaven;[b] and he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried their ashes to Bethel.

Psalm 115:4-8 (NKJV)- Their idols are silver and gold, The work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; Eyes they have, but they do not see; They have ears, but they do not hear; Noses they have, but they do not smell; They have hands, but they do not handle; Feet they have, but they do not walk;

Nor do they mutter through their throat. Those who make them are like them; So is everyone who trusts in them.

Exodus 20:3 (NKJV)-You shall have no other gods before Me.

Exodus 22:20 (NKJV)-20 He who sacrifices to any god, except to the Lord only, he shall be utterly destroyed.

Colossians 3:5 (NKJV)-Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

2 Corinthians 6:17 (NKJV)-17 Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.”

1 Corinthians 5:11 (NKJV)-11 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortion—not even to eat with such a person.
