He Did Not Do Many Mighty Works

Topic: Miracles Are Limited Because of Lack Of Faith

Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

Matthew 13:58 (NKJV)

Bible Reading Plan

1 Chronicles 16-20

Bible Versions

Matthew 13:58 (MSG) — He didn’t do many miracles there because of their hostile indifference.

Matthew 13:58 (NLT) — And so he did only a few miracles there because of their unbelief.

Matthew 13:58 (NIV) — And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

Devotional Thoughts:

The Bible teaches us on this ocassion how Jesus was rejected when he returned to his hometown of Nazareth. Instead of being received as Messiah and Savior, they received him with suspicion and disbelief. Many of them instead of believing in him, had many questions and did not believe. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works?, Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? (Matthew 13:54-55). This portion of Scripture gives us a real and very sad picture of what happens when unbelief dominates our lives.

Jesus did not get to do many miracles because of the unbelief in their hearts. He wanted to demonstrate his miraculous power among his own, but could not for lack of faith. How pitiful, Jesus had the desire, longed, wanted to do more miracles, but because of the obstacle of disbelief could not. They lost the blessing of his miracle because of their situation. I wonder how many times we limit God in our lives? How many times God wants to do miracles in our midst? But we are the ones who stop the manifestation of His miraculous power!

Today we must determine to not put limits on the miracles that God wants to do in our lives. The thought that there are miracles that God holds in our lives because of the lack of faith or unbelief must cause great uneasiness in us. Losing my miracle because of lack of faith! This should cause us to grow in our faith and eagerly anticipate to see the manifestation of God’s miracles in our need. He is a God of miracles, you just have to believe, remember what Mark 9:23 tells us, “Jesus said, If you can believe, then believes all things are possible.”

Topical References:

Matthew 17:20 (NKJV) — So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

Mark 6:5 (NKJV) — Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.

Mark 6:6 (NKJV) — And He marveled because of their unbelief. Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching.

Luke 4:27–29 (NKJV) —And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.” So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff.

Mark 9:23 (NKJV) — Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
