8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more.

trial and convicted.
John 16:8–10(MSG -)10 “When he comes, he’ll expose the error of the godless world’s view of sin, righteousness, and judgment: He’ll show them that their refusal to believe in me is their basic sin; that righteousness comes from above, where I am with the Father, out of their sight and control.
The work of the Holy Spirit is not only to convince the world of sin, but also to teach them that divine righteousness is available only by the person of Jesus Christ. Romans 3: 24-25 tells us, ” being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed.” It is only by death on the cross that we sinners can obtain justification. Not on our own merit, but for the sacrifice that Jesus made on Calvary!
Today there are many who believe themselves righteous before God for their own works, or for how good they believe they are! It is in these situations that the Holy Spirit brings conviction and teaches the world that outside the death of Jesus “The Righteous” has no hope of salvation, or eternal life. In 2 Corinthians 5: 20-21 he tells us, ” Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.“
The Holy Spirit this morning testifies to our spirit that we are righteous, not by our own strength, but by the faith that we have placed in Jesus. He has revealed to us in our hearts that believing in Jesus attains righteousness; this results in the obedience of His commandments. In Philippians 3: 9 the Apostle Paul declares this truth very well, “and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith.” Thanks to the Holy Spirit for his work of opening the eyes of unbelievers, so they may come to see the great need of salvation.
Acts 3:14-15N (NKJV)-14 But you denied the Holy One and the Just, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 and killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses.
Acts 7:52(NKJV)-52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers.
Acts 17:31 (NKJV)-31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”
