The Spirit With Which He Spoke

Topic: The Wisdom and The Word Under the Anointing of the Spirit

And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke

Acts 6: 10 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

Joshua 16-19

Bible Versions:

Acts 6:10 (NIV)-10 But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.

Acts 6:10 (MSG)-10 But they were no match for his wisdom and spirit when he spoke.

Acts 6:10 (NLT)-10 None of them could stand against the wisdom and the Spirit with which Stephen spoke.

Devotional Thoughts:

We see one of the first disciples, Stephen, a man who was powerfully used by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the gospel. In this occasion he was under great opposition by several religious groups. These men who opposed him could not cope with the wisdom and words with which Stephen spoke. The reason for this, it was not really Stephen speaking, it was the Holy Spirit giving him words to proclaim, Luke 14: 11-12, tells us “Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

The disciple Stephen had within his reach the person of the Holy Spirit, what a greater privilege! It was the Spirit who gave him the wisdom, the anointing, and the power to be effective in the work of evangelism. The power of the gospel proclamation did not come from Him, but came from the Holy Spirit! Only in this way could Stephen have great courage, and courage to declare the truth of the gospel. The power of the Holy Spirit over his life and his ministry was evident as Acts 6: 8 tells us, “And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people.”

What a tremendous example for us to follow, of a man who was powerfully used by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the gospel with such steadfastness and assurance. Today we must seek to have this courage and wisdom that comes from a life of intimacy with the Holy Spirit. If we really want to have the right words and the wisdom to evangelize we need to depend on the Holy Spirit. We can go out into the streets and testify with assurance and confidence that He is going with us, that He will give us the right words to touch the  hearts with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Foundational Scriptures:

Acts 5:39(NKJV)-39” but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found to fight against God.”

Acts 7:51  (NKJV)-51 “You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you.

Exodus 4:12 (NKJV)-12 Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say.”

Isaiah 54:17 (NKJV)-17 No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment. You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, And their righteousness is from Me,” Says the Lord.

Jeremiah 1:19 (NKJV)-19 They will fight against you, But they shall not prevail against you., For I am with you,” says the Lord, “to deliver you.”

Matthew 10:19-20 (NKJV)-19 But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

Luke 12:11-12 (NKJV)-11 “Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say. 12 For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

Luke 21:14-15 (NKJV)-14 Therefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will answer; 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist.

John 7:46 (NKJV)-46 The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this Man!”

Luke 21:15 (NKJV)-15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist.

  1. We shouldn’t rely on our own words or understanding!!! Instead we should rely on God to use us as his vessel, so he may breathe words of life and wisdom into us!!!

  2. Yes! Thank You Jesus!!! Give me the right words and wisdom to talk to your people!!!
    Luke 12:11-12 (NLT)
11 “And when you are brought to trial in the synagogues and before rulers and authorities, don’t worry about how to defend yourself or what to say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what needs to be said.”
