What Do You Have In The House?

Topic: The Multiplication of Our Provision

So Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.”

2 Kings 4:2 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

Leviticus 14-15

Bible Versions:

2 Kings 4:2 (MSG) ― Elisha said, “I wonder how I can be of help. Tell me, what do you have in your house?” “Nothing,” she said. “Well, I do have a little oil.”

2 Kings 4:2 (NLT) ― “What can I do to help you?” Elisha asked. “Tell me, what do you have in the house?” “Nothing at all, except a flask of olive oil,” she replied.

Thoughts Of Devotion:

This morning the question is, what do you have in your house? This is the same question that the prophet Elisha asked to the widow. Her answer was nothing, just a pot of oil! In the eyes of the widow she did not have enough to eat, and on top of this she was impoverished and in debt. In 2 Kings 4: 1 it described to us the desperate situation of the widow, “A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.”

What a huge dilemma this woman had, she was desperately in need of a miracle of provision. She went to the servant of God waiting for a solution to her financial crisis. The prophet’s answer was simple, what do you have at home? What do you have in your hands? Although it was only a jar of oil, something as minimal and without value, this was what God was going to use to make the miracle of provision! In 2 Kings 4: 3-4 we see the instructions of the Prophet, “he said, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few. And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.”

The result of her obedience and faith was that with one jar of oil, many oil jars were filled miraculously! The oil multiplied so much that there was enough to sell it and pay all of her creditors and there was even enough for her and her children to live from it. Praise God for the provision of abundance! What seemed an impossible and very difficult situation, God used it to show his miraculous power. Thank God that whenever he enters the scene in our crisis or situation there is plenty of supply.

Through this story we see the fulfillment of Ephesians 3:20, “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” This is why there is no time today to hesitate or waver in our faith and trust. It is time to put everything we have in the Lord’s hands. The question is, what do you have at home? Maybe not much but if we give it to the Lord, we can be sure that he will do the miracle and multiply our provision.

  1. God is so good and faithful! All we have to do is put whatever we have in his hands and He will show himself faithful!

Either we keep what we have and struggle to make ends meet or we give what we have to God and watch him turn it into more than enough!

  2. We should give god our ALL!! Even if it’s the smallest bit. When we do so, we are believing that God will provide what we need and MORE!!!
