Who Are You, O Great Mountain?

Topic: Removing Obstacles with the Power of the Holy Spirit

Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain! And he shall bring forth the capstone; With shouts of “Grace, grace to it!

Zechariah 4: 7 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

Exodus 24-26

Bible Versions:

Zechariah 4:7 (NLT)-Nothing, not even a mighty mountain, will stand in Zerubbabel’s way; it will become a level plain before him! And when Zerubbabel sets the final stone of the Temple in place, the people will shout: ‘May God bless it! May God bless it!’

Zechariah 4:7 (NIV)-“What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of ‘God bless it! God bless it!’”

Zechariah 4:7 (TLB)-Therefore no mountain, however high, can stand before Zerubbabel! For it will flatten out before him! And Zerubbabel will finish building this Temple with mighty shouts of thanksgiving for God’s mercy, declaring that all was done by grace alone.”*

Devotional Thoughts:

This morning I ask you, are you facing a mountain of opposition? We see that Zerubbabel received a promise from the Lord, that no mountain, no matter how great, could stop the purposes of God! No adversary was going to succeed in preventing or halting the building of the temple. The Lord had promised that it would not be by human force, or with the few resources the people had, but under the power of the Holy Spirit! In Haggai 2: 8-9 the Lord declared,‘The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,’ says the Lord of hosts. The glory of this latter temple shall be greater than the former,’ says the Lord of hosts…

God always provides the strength and resources to carry out His will. Nothing can stop this; every mountain of impossibility must move by the power of the Holy Spirit! When you trust God, and trust in the power of your Spirit, the supernatural will happen. In Mark 11:23 we read, “For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.”  This is the certainty that we all have, our faith and dependence on the Holy Spirit has the ability to move mountains!

By reading this promise we can rest assure that there is no opposition that can stop the power of the Holy Spirit. There is no reason to be discouraged or to lose our dependence on the Lord by seeing the mountain in front of us. Today all doubt and fear must be discarded, it is time to trust in His promises! Let us remember that no task will be impossible when the Holy Spirit empowers our lives to carry out His divine will. We can depend on His strength, strategy and wisdom! If God is with us, who can be against us? No obstacle can overcome the power of the Holy Spirit. Knowing this, we must move to the future, every mountain will be reduced to nothing when we depend on the Holy Spirit!

Foundational Scriptures:

Isaiah 40:4 (NKJV)-Every valley shall be exalted And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight And the rough places smooth;

Jeremiah 51:25 (NKJV)-25 “Behold, I am against you, O destroying mountain, Who destroys all the earth,” says the Lord. “And I will stretch out My hand against you, Roll you down from the rocks, And make you a burnt mountain.

Psalm 114:4 (NKJV)-The mountains skipped like rams, The little hills like lambs.

Habakkuk 3:6 (NKJV)-He stood and measured the earth; He looked and startled the nations. And the everlasting mountains were scattered, The perpetual hills bowed. His ways are everlasting.

Matthew 17:20 (NKJV)-20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

Matthew 21:21  (NKJV)-21 So Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done.

Mark 11:23  (NKJV)-23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.

  1. Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God ; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.
    Psalm 62:5‭-‬8 NIV

  2. We must have are faith in the Holy Spirit. If we have he Holy Spirit with us nothing can stop us. We must just trust him. Because it is not by strength but it by the Holy Spirit. We must not lose hope if we see a mountain because if we have the Holy Spirit with us that mountain will be crushed.
