The fruit of kindness is always accompanied by mercy and forgiveness in the life of the spiritual believer. At various times the Word of God tells us to be kind to one another, and it always includes mercy and forgiveness! Not only do we see this in the present text of Ephesians 4:32, but also in Colossians 3: 12-13, “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. “
To bear the fruit of the Spirit we need to discard everything that does not go with our spiritual life. In Ephesians 4:31 it tells us, “Let all bitterness, wrath, wrath, shouting and slander and all malice be taken away from you.” These things should have no root in our lives. On the contrary, we must clothe ourselves with the new man, forgiving and having mercy on those who offend us! This must be our way of life, forgiving as God has forgiven us. In Matthew 6: 14-15 we are told, “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. “
When we bear fruit of the Spirit in our walk with the Lord then we will also be merciful to all, especially to those who offend and hurt us! In Luke 6:36 Jesus exhorted his disciples to say, “Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.” Mercy goes hand in hand with kindness; when we are kind, then we are also merciful. Thank God that today we have no reason to be bitter, or angry with everyone. The Holy Spirit fills us with compassion, mercy, and forgiveness. This morning it is possible to live a quality life in the Spirit, without having to walk in the flesh! A life full of frustration and anger.
Luke 6:35 (NKJV) 35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil.
Romans 12:10 (NKJV) 10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;
Proverbs 16:7 (NKJV) When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.
Matthew 6:14-15 (NKJV) 14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Colossians 3:12-13 (NKJV) 12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.
