Topic: Our Provision Is In Our Obedience To His Word
5 But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” 6 And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.
Luke 5:5-6 (NKJV)
Daily Reading Plan
Luke 5:5-6 (NLT) — 5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” 6 And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear!
Luke 5:5-6 (MSG) — 5 Simon said, “Master, we’ve been fishing hard all night and haven’t caught even a minnow. But if you say so, I’ll let out the nets.” It was no sooner said than done—a huge haul of fish, straining the nets past capacity.
Luke 5:5-6 (NIV) — 5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” 6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.
Thoughts Of Devotion:
What a powerful experience is described in the Word of God this morning! We watch as Peter and some of the disciples faced a challenge to their faith. For them it was a moment where their obedience was being tested by the Master. In depended in their obedience, if they succeeded in seeing a superabundant provision! The Lord gave an order and they would be to obey or doubt. In Luke 5: 4 we see the instructions the Lord had given them, “When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
When listening to the orders of the Lord, Peter’s answer was, Lord we have already tried and we could not catch even one fish! All our effort, dedication and work and we have achieved nothing were the words of the disciples. The circumstances were saying the opposite of the orders that were given of the Master, there was no logic to the challenge He presented them. What they were experiencing is very similar to what often happens to us in our lives. We have fished all night, all year and we have not managed to see the overabundance of God on our lives. We have tried everything in our power and it has not functioned!
The difference is that Peter obeyed Jesus’ words. He said, “In your word I throw the net!” and the result was clear, the miraculous catch, a superabundant supply to the extent that the nets broke and the boat sank of so much blessing! Today if we want to see the same result, we must build our trust and faith in his Word. Take this challenge to obey God even when things seem illogical. The Lord wants to bless our lives, his will is for us to experience His superabundant supply! But only in obedience will we succeed in seeing God work miraculously in our midst.
John 21:3 (NKJV) — 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing.
Luke 6:46 (NKJV) — 46 “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?
Psalm 33:9 (NKJV) 9 For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.
Hebrews 11:3 (NKJV) — 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.
