Romans 5:8 (NLT) — But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
Proverbs 10:12 (NLT) — Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love makes up for all offenses.
The Bible constantly calls us to forgive our neighbor. It lets us know that forgiveness is never an option, but a very clear and definite commandment. We must always forgive unconditionally! But to do this, it will take a genuine and sincere love from us toward those who have offended and hurt us. If we truly love God, we need to love our neighbor. 1 John 4:20 tells us, “If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?”
It will require real and true love from us, if we are to truly forgive. A love according to Scripture, a love that only God can give to our hearts. A fervent love, “and above all things have fervent love, because love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8). We understand that forgiveness is not easy and never takes place through our own efforts and reasoning. Sometimes our minds and hearts tell us, why forgive!, I have no desire to forgive! It is in those moments that we need God’s grace to overcome the offenses of others.
Even the Bible teaches us the importance of having the right attitude when we discover the faults of others. Galatians 6:1 says, “Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.” It will be the sincere love from our part that will demonstrate forgiveness and love toward those who have offended us. We all have faults! No one is exempt from failing, and it is such a blessing to know that there are people who love and restore us to the truth.
1 Peter 4:8 (NKJV) — And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”
Proverbs 17:9 (NKJV) — He who covers a transgression seeks love, But he who repeats a matter separates friends.
James 5:20 (NKJV) — let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.
1 Corinthians 13:4 (NKJV) — Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;
Galatians 6:1 (NKJV) — Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.
