Topic: The Danger of Stagnant Growth

12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.

Hebrews 5:12 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

Matthew 25-26

Bible Versions:

Hebrews 5:12 (NLT) — 12 You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food.

Hebrews 5:12 (NIV) — 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!

Thoughts of Devotion:

The question this morning is, where should I be in my spiritual growth? For that we must be honest with ourselves, without deception or lie! It’s a difficult question, but necessary if we really want to leave the state in which we are and enter a new dimension of growth and development. In this Scripture it speaks of those who have fallen into a spiritual stagnation, where growth is arrested and paralyzed. They had reached a place where they had limited their growth. Hebrews 5:11 tells us, “of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.”

They had come to a place where growth and spiritual development was absent. The severity of the problem was that they already had stopped to put into practice what they heard to the extent that the NIV says, “because for you, it goes in one ear and out the other.” How sad it is when we do not act on what we hear, when we get to the place in our walk with God that we are dull of hearing and stop growing. We are in the same place, or worse, have fallen from where we were one day. We only have memories of better days, days when we were growing up and making great spiritual progress.

If this is our condition, it is time to wake up and do everything possible to get out of this state! There is much more that God has for our lives, and we cannot be the ones who place our own limits. In 1 Corinthians 3: 1, it says, “And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ.” It is time move forward from the perpetual childhood and move to a state of maturity and spiritual development. God never puts limits on our growth, we are the ones that do! Today let us take the path of progress, it’s time to break down barriers that are over our lives. Let us go forward to greater things! Amen.

Foundational Scriptures:

1 Corinthians 3:1 (NKJV) — 3 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ.

1 Corinthians 3:2 (NKJV) — I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able;

John 16:12 (NKJV) — 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

Hebrews 6:12 (NKJV) — 12 that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

1 Peter 2:2 (NKJV) — as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,
