Thoughts of Devotion:
It is very important on this day that we may bear fruit for the Lord. The fruit is what identifies and shows the true spiritual condition of every believer. One can bear good fruit or bad fruit; this is what will define whether we are really spiritual or if we are walking in the flesh. In. Matthew 7:16–18 Jesus gives us a great lesson on this subject, “You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.”
This morning we must examine our lives and see if we are truly giving fruit for God. This will require for us to honest with ourselves, and let the Holy Spirit reveal unto us our true spiritual condition. We cannot deceive ourselves that just because we call ourselves Christians, indeed we are! The only way you can prove our true Christianity is by the spiritual fruit we are giving through the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. In Galatians 5:22 clearly tells us, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”
A spiritual person will be known by the spiritual fruit that he gives daily in his walk with the Lord, His character and conduct will show his true spiritual state! The challenge will be to walk in the Spirit and not let ourselves be dominated by our human nature, our carnal passions. Without the help of the Holy Spirit we can never give spiritual fruit. On the contrary our flesh will dominate us, which is our sinful nature. We will produce the sad works of the flesh as taught in Galatians 5: 19-21, “are manifest the works of the flesh, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, strife, seditions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these … “
The Holy Spirit desires to produce spiritual fruit in us, but we must surrender ourselves completely to his will for our lives! That he may fill us and lead us in His ways. This will always require from us to spend time in intimacy with Him alone. It will be essential and necessary if we wish to give spiritual fruit for the Lord.
Matthew 7:16–18 (NKJV) — 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
Matthew 7:20 (NKJV) — 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
Matthew 12:33 (NKJV) — 33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.
Luke 6:44 (NKJV) — 44 For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush.
James 2:18 (NKJV) — 18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
Galatians 5:19–23 (NKJV) — 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
James 3:12 (NKJV) — 12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.
