Thoughts of Devotion:
Spiritual development must be very intentional in our lives. We must determine ourselves and make a firm decision to grow spiritually. It will require diligence and effort on our part as we are told in 2 Peter 1: 5, ” for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge.” Growth will not come by chance, but we have to work hard to see the fruit in our lives. We are able to see in verses 5-7 describe the importance of putting diligence, it is a list that includes faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, patience, godliness, brotherly affection, and love.
One can ask, what is diligence? Diligence means that care, promptness, urgency, flexibility and efficiency with the things one desires to take care of. When one intends to grow spiritually and decides not to stay stagnant, it will be necessary to give a focus on spiritual areas of life. Only in this way will we walk worthy of the Lord and be fruitful in growth as Colossians 1:10 says, “that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.”
Today there is a great urgency to see believers who take seriously the spiritual growth in their lives. They really work hard and do everything in their power to develop a fruitful and productive life. We must be willing to leave aside the comfort and spiritual laziness for growth! I think that’s one of the biggest obstacles in the development of many believers. That is why Romans 12:11 tells us, “not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.” This morning, it is time to leave laziness to one side and let us strive on our spiritual development.
John 15:2 (NKJV) — 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
Colossians 1:10 (NKJV) — 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
Romans 12:11 (NKJV) — 11 not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;
Hebrews 6:12 (NKJV) — 12 that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
2 Peter 1:5 (NKJV) — 5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge,
