Thoughts of Devotion:
Every time God calls someone to a task or ministry, the Holy Spirit anoints with fresh oil! We see in this portion of the Scriptures how the young man David was chosen by God, after King Saul had lost the kingdom as it tells us in 1 Samuel 13:14, “But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.” God looked for a useful and willing vessel to be used in a special way and David was that man!
The ceremony of anointment officiated by the Prophet Samuel was a special and important moment. Samuel went with a mission; God had sent him to anoint the next king of Israel. The Holy Spirit had already chosen the next monarchy for Israel; it was going to be a man after God’s heart. In Samuel 16:7 it tells us, “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
The oil poured over David represented the anointing of the Holy Spirit over his life. The presence of the Spirit would give him wisdom and power, and was going to give him direction for the fulfillment of the purposes of God. This anointing was what would make David different from the rest, it was going to enable him to carry out his calling as it tells us in 1 Samuel 16:18, “Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lordis with him.”
1 Samuel 10:1NKJV) —10 Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him and said: “Is it not because the Lord has anointed you commander over His inheritance?
2 Kings 9:6 (NKJV) — 6 Then he arose and went into the house. And he poured the oil on his head, and said to him, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘I have anointed you king over the people of the Lord, over Israel.
Psalm 89:20 (NKJV) — 20 I have found My servant David; With My holy oil I have anointed him,
Psalm 92:10 (NKJV) — 10 But my horn You have exalted like a wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil.
1 Samuel 16:18 (NKJV) — 18 Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him.”
1 Samuel 10:6 (NKJV) — 6 Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.
1 Samuel 10:10 (NKJV) — 10 When they came there to the hill, there was a group of prophets to meet him; then the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.
