Thoughts of Devotion:
In these verses we see the fulfillment of the promise of the Holy Spirit, the much anticipated day had finally come! The prophecy given by the prophet Joel had begun, “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. 29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.” The time of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit had begun, empowered from on high! An outpouring without measure, came to pass.
The disciples received the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues. They received a supernatural manifestation of the Holy Spirit, they were filled and submerged in his presence! The fountain of living water overflowed from within them, as the scripture says, “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”
Today we have the promise of the Holy Spirit, its filling is at our reach this morning! The promise is real and true, the gift is in our reach all we have to do is take it. In Luke 3:16 it tells us, “John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
If we don’t have the gift of the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, all we have to do is ask for it and he will give it to us! Let us remember the promise in Luke 11:13, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” Now is the time, the Holy Spirit is filling those who seek him and desire his presence.
