Thoughts Of Devotion:

The disciples desired the will of God to fill the space of leadership Judas left. After much prayer and reviewing the requirements of apostleship, two names excelled, Joseph called Barsabbas, and Matthias. Now the final step was to confirm who God would select, it wasn’t enough with their own approval, the disciples sought the approval of God! They understood that God chose based on the heart, not just appearance! As it teaches us in 1 Samuel 16:7, “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” The heart is something God looks at when he chooses people to serve in a position of authority and leadership.

The Holy Spirit chooses a person by searching their true condition. This has been the way God has always chosen leadership, there hasn’t been any other way, the heart is the key! In 1 Chronicles 28:9, it teaches us the way King Solomon was chosen to be king over his people, “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.”

Today things haven’t changed, the Holy Spirit continues searching the heart of men, only he knows what is truly inside of us! In Romans 8:27, “Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” This morning it is important to let the Holy Spirit examine our interior and mold us to his image. Only he can do the genuine work, without it we will be out of the will of God for our lives. Only the Holy Spirit can reveal the true condition of our hearts.

Foundational Scriptures:

Acts 15:8 (NKJV) — So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us

1 Samuel 16:7 (NKJV) —But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

1 Kings 8:39 (NKJV) — 39 then hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive, and act, and give to everyone according to all his ways, whose heart You know (for You alone know the hearts of all the sons of men),

1 Chronicles 28:9 (NKJV) — “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.

Jeremiah 17:10 (NKJV) — 10 I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.

John 2:24-25 (NKJV) —24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.

John 21:17 (NKJV) — 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.

Romans 8:27 (NKJV) — 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
