Thoughts of Devotion:
Jesus’s disciples received a special promise, one of power! They were to be transformed completely when the Holy Spirit descended upon their lives. The power of the Holy Spirit would give them the necessary strength so that they would be witnesses. There preaching would not only be one of words, but of power as he tells us in 1 Thess. 1:5, “For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.” They possessed a gospel of power, a gospel that transformed lives.
To accomplish the mission it was going to take more than talent or natural ability, this would be ineffective on their own! They needed to be endowed by the power from the Most High. They would burn with the fire and passion of Jesus in their hearts. In Acts 4:33 he tells us this, “And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.” The power given by the Holy Spirit was not going to be just a show, or to show it off to others, it was to preach and impact lives! The mission of Jesus requires this power, it required this training.
Today we also need this power, it would be impossible to fulfill the mission without it! More than anything else we need to be invested with the power of the Holy Spirit. Remember the words of the prophet Zechariah, “So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts.” (Zechariah 4: 6). There is an urgency to take this word seriously, without the power of the Holy Spirit we will not succeed in the mission! The work of world evangelism would be dead and without progress.
Let us pray, that this morning we will renew our spiritual strength. May the Spirit will fill us with power and courage to leave the four walls of the church and proclaim the Gospel with courage, dedication, confidence and authority. The harvest is great, the mission is very extensive, and it will require men and women saturated and immersed in the fire of the Holy Spirit.
