2 As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away.

Acts 13:2-3 (NIV) — 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.
Acts 13:2-3 (NLT) — 2 One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Appoint Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them.” 3 So after more fasting and prayer, the men laid their hands on them and sent them on their way.
Acts 13:2–3 (MSG) — One day as they were worshiping God—they were also fasting as they waited for guidance—the Holy Spirit spoke: “Take Barnabas and Saul and commission them for the work I have called them to do.” 3 So they commissioned them. In that circle of intensity and obedience, of fasting and praying, they laid hands on their heads and sent them off.
Thoughts of Devotion:
The Church of the Book of Acts was a church that had a divine strategy. Everything they did yielded success and fruit, the gospel grew everywhere! In Acts 19:20 it tells us, “So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.’ The advance and progress of the first disciples was with great momentum, they were fulfilling the mission of Jesus very quickly and effectively. Also in Acts 6:7 it says, “Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.” There was multiplication and growth everywhere.
The reason why this was happening was that they possessed a divine strategy from the Holy Spirit. Through the Holy Spirit, the Apostles received direction and council on what they should do. They worshipped the Lord, they separated in fasting and prayer, and as a result of this the Holy Spirit revealed to them the details and plans for them to carry out the mission of Jesus. They were just obedient and flowed with what God wanted to do with the church, and as a result, great things were made through their lives!
Today we need to have a divine strategy from the Holy Spirit. Sometimes there is no fruit or very little fruit because we are not spending the time in the presence of God receiving guidance and advice on what we should be doing. It’s sad but we often try to do the work of God in our own efforts, and our poor ideas and as a result nothing ever happens. It’s time to change this morning, there is a move of the Holy Spirit in our day! He wants to give us the divine strategy, that we will be able to see success in the mission we have before us, to be fruitful believers in the work of the Lord!
