Thoughts of Devotion:
The Church of the Book of Acts was a giving and generous church. Many believers had a grateful and liberal heart and gave their property, supplying to the needs! In Acts 4:34-35 it tells us, “Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, 35 and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need.” (Acts 4: 34-35). The church had all the necessary resources; there wasn’t a need that wasn’t supplied!
What a model to follow this morning, what a challenge to us, to be more generous with the material things we possess. Generosity is an act of the heart, not the wallet; a generous heart always has something to give to the Lord’s work! 2 Corinthians 8:2 gives us another example of the church of Macedonia, “that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality.” Even in the midst of a need we can offer something for the work of God to advance and have the resources necessary to carry out the great commission, to meet every need that is presented!
Now is the time to practice generosity in our lives, God is calling us to share what He has given us! It is a blessing to be a blessing to others. Something happens in the heart of one when we give to the Lord with a liberal heart. It reminds me of the passage in Exodus 35:21 that says, “Then everyone came whose heart was stirred, and everyone whose spirit was willing, and they brought the Lord’s offering for the work of the tabernacle of meeting, for all its service, and for the holy garments.” Never forget that generosity is an act of the heart, when one loves and is grateful, he always has something to offer the Lord!
Deuteronomy 2:7 (NKJV) — 7 “For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand. He knows your trudging through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.”’
Mark 10:21 (NKJV) — 21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.”
Luke 12:33-34 (NKJV) — 33 Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
2 Corinthians 9:6 (NKJV) — 6 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.
2 Corinthians 8:2 (NKJV) — 2 that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality.
