Thoughts Of Devotion:
The Book of Acts gives us the model of a church that preached the gospel with power and effectiveness. Its message was very focused on the resurrection of Jesus Christ, as it shows us in Acts 17:3, “explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.” The message was very sharp, Jesus Christ, crucified and risen! The Scriptures were very instrumental in exposing the gospel of Jesus Christ. They did not preach philosophies, or religion, they shared the central message of the gospel.
From the first sermon preached by the Apostle Peter, it was very clear that the preaching was a call to repentance, “Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2: 37-38). They carried this message of the death and resurrection of Jesus not from house to house, but to all the crowds in public, lives continually came to repentance!
The message of salvation was reaching the hearts of hundreds of thousands of people. The disciples were dedicated and committed to this task, as taught in Acts 18:5, “When Silas and Timothy had come from Macedonia, Paul was compelled by the Spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ.” This is what the church needs today, to renew their commitment to the gospel of Jesus! A message focused on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, in need of repentance for salvation. We cannot stray away from the centrality of the gospel, preaching is one of the most important factors in the mission of the church.
Acts 17:18 (NKJV) — 18 Then certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, “What does this babbler want to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods,” because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection
Acts 28:31 (NKJV) — 31 preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no one forbidding him.
Acts 11:20 (NKJV) — 20 But some of them were men from Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists, preaching the Lord Jesus.
