Acts 10:38 (NLT) — 38 And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
The Bible teaches us how Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit with the purpose of fulfilling his earthly ministry. Under this anointing of the Holy Spirit, Jesus preached the good news of the gospel, proclaim liberty to the captives, He would heal those oppressed by the devil, and He would do great miracles and wonders. The anointing of the Holy Spirit was so essential and important in the development and implementation of the mission that Jesus had before Him. This anointing worked in a powerful and effective manner. Thank God for the anointing of the Holy Spirit! His anointing oil is poured over our lives this morning.
Reading the Scriptures we find that olive oil was something of great importance in Palestine, to be used for food, medicine, lighting and anointing. It was a constant symbol of the Holy Spirit in the Old and New Testaments. What symbolism is in the anointing oil? The oil for anointing symbolizes strength, power, healing, illumination, separation and consecration. The Bible tells us that we have this anointing of the Holy Spirit, “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things” (1 John 2:20). The benefits of the anointing of the Holy Spirit are many, we are blessed by having the anointing oil on our lives.
Today more than ever we must understand that without the anointing of the Holy Spirit, it would be impossible to fulfill our calling and ministry that we have from the Lord. We need His fresh anointing on our lives! In Psalm 92:10 we are promised, “but you will increase my strength as buffalo, I will be anointed with fresh oil.” May our prayer be, “Holy Spirit anoint me with your fresh oil.”
Matthew 12:18 (NKJV) — 18 “Behold! My Servant whom I have chosen, My Beloved in whom My soul is well pleased! I will put My Spirit upon Him, And He will declare justice to the Gentiles.
Isaiah 61:1 (NKJV) — 61 “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
Acts 1:2 (NKJV) — 2 until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen,
Psalms 45:7 (NKJV) — 7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.
Isaiah 11:2 (NKJV) — The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.
