It Is Finished

Topic: The Finishing Work On The Cross

So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

John 19:30 (NKJV)

Daily Reading Plan

1 Samuel 1-3

Bible Versions:

John 19:30 (NLT) — When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and released his spirit.

John 19:30 (MSG) — After he took the wine, Jesus said, “It’s done . . . complete.” Bowing his head, he offered up his spirit.

John 19:30 (CEB) — When he had received the sour wine, Jesus said, “It is completed.” Bowing his head, he gave up his life.

Devotional Thoughts:

What majestic work was that of our Lord Jesus Christ! His work on this earth was unique and true. He came to be born in a manger and then at the end of his life die on Mount Golgotha hung from the Cross for our sins. His entire earthly life was with a purpose, finishing the work entrusted to him. His daily life was to continually fulfill the will of His Father. We read in John 4:34, “Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.”

Finally Jesus reaches the end of his work, He had fully and successfully performed the task that the Father had for him, die for the sins of mankind! As stated by Jesus himself in John 17:4, “I have glorified you on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.” All his life he lived glorifying his Father, doing His work and His perfect will. Jesus had finally done the work entrusted to him and he was able to say with satisfaction “I’ve finished,” it is done, it is fulfilled. This work was difficult, painful, but now it was over. Now the door is opened to everyone, anywhere and in any condition to approach the cross and put their faith in Christ, enjoying a new relationship with God.

What an example the Lord has left for each of us. The power to declare with certainty and security, “It’s finished” Everything was done; nothing was left undone, 100% fulfilled. I wonder, could we say the same? At the end of our lives here on earth. If Jesus’ words show us something it’s that, it is possible! As we see the mission of Jesus and everything he went through, we understand that it will not be easy. Like Jesus we must carry our cross and carry out the mission entrusted to us.
