It is important to recognize today that following Jesus is a personal and voluntary decision that one must take . Through the Bible we see that Jesus never forced anyone to follow Him. Jesus wanted those who decided to follow Him to posses a willing heart, and a burning passion to be a genuine and true disciple. Jesus continually made the invitation, “If anyone would be my disciple”, He looked for people to answer the call to follow him, those men who were willing to drop everything to answer the call to discipleship!
The call to discipleship is a call that will always require complete sacrifice and self- denial. We see it’s more than just a decision one takes lightly, but rather is marked by a very high price. We see this very clearly in the story of the rich young man in Mark 10:21 when, “Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.” Jesus confronted this young man with a well defined decision. He told the young man, discarded and abandon all your possessions and take up your Cross !
It is for this reason that the cross and discipleship go hand in hand. You can not be a disciple of Jesus, if you do not take the Cross of Christ. In Luke 14:27 Jesus said it very clearly, ” And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me can not be My disciple”. It is impossible to be a true disciple of Jesus, if there is no sacrifice , surrender and self-denial. On this day if we want to follow Jesus and be His disciple, we must take up our own Cross. There is no other way or form to be a true disciples of the Lord, there is only one way, and this way always take us to the foot of the Cross.

1 Thessalonians 3:3 (NKJV) — that no one should be shaken by these afflictions; for you yourselves know that we are appointed to this.
